Synthesizing research patterns without fake certainty

Affinity clusters of interview quotes on an olive research board

Pattern synthesis is the craft of clustering mechanisms—not averaging opinions into a fictional majority. degrex keeps themes falsifiable and tied to sources from interviews, observation, and friction maps.

From tags to themes

Begin with tagged excerpts from decision-maker interviews and notes from market observation. Group by mechanism: what caused hesitation, what created confidence, what labor was underestimated. Separate role perspectives so a champion’s enthusiasm does not erase a security reviewer’s caution.

When participants repeatedly mention living inside QuickBooks—or any system of record—capture that as a structural pattern: category gravity, integration anxiety, or narrative dependency. Do not inflate “eight of twelve people said” into market share language. Counts inside a convenience sample are memory aids for the research team, not publishable stats.

Saturation as judgment

Saturation means new interviews stop introducing new mechanisms for the scoped segment. It is a judgment call documented in field notes, not a spreadsheet threshold. If finance buyers keep inventing new procurement detours, you are not done. If they recycle the same migration fears with new metaphors, you may be ready to write claim candidates.

Outputs that marketing can use

Useful synthesis packages include: three mechanism cards, a friction shortlist linked to purchase friction, phrase banks with source IDs, and open questions for the next wave. Useless packages include mood boards of adjectives and “insights” that cannot be traced to a quote.

  1. Export tagged excerpts with role and stage metadata.
  2. Cluster by mechanism, not by product feature wishlist.
  3. Write one falsifiable statement per cluster.
  4. Pressure-test statements in the next interviews.
  5. Hand surviving statements to positioning work.
A pattern is a repeated mechanism with consequences. A vibe is a slide title.

When clusters stabilize, move into positioning from evidence. Keep the audit trail: which interviews, which artifacts, which counterexamples you discarded and why.

FAQ-style guardrails

Can we say “most customers”?

Not from a qualitative convenience sample. Say “in this wave, the dominant mechanism was…”

How many themes should we keep?

Fewer than your ego wants—usually three to five mechanisms per scoped segment.

What if outliers are vivid?

Park them as edge cases. Vividness is not prevalence.
